• Best Optical Clarity Among Plastics

  PMMA transmits 92% of visible light — higher than any other common plastic and comparable to optical glass. It has very low haze and excellent color neutrality, making it the standard for optical lenses, light guides, display covers, and any application where visual clarity is the primary requirement.

• Excellent UV Resistance

  Unlike PC (which yellows without UV stabilization), PMMA is inherently UV-stable — it resists yellowing and maintains optical clarity outdoors for 10+ years. This makes PMMA the standard for outdoor signage, architectural glazing, and exterior lighting covers.

• Better Scratch Resistance Than PC

  PMMA is harder than polycarbonate — its scratch resistance is closer to glass than soft plastics. For display covers, instrument panels, and optical surfaces handled repeatedly, PMMA holds its appearance better than PC.

• Excellent Polishability

  PMMA polishes to optical clarity — flame polishing, buffing, or diamond turning brings machined edges and surfaces to a glass-like finish. This is essential for light guide edges and optical components where machined surfaces must transmit light without scatter.

• Cast PMMA (Optical Grade)

  Lower internal stress and better optical homogeneity than extruded PMMA — the standard for optical components, thick lenses, and parts requiring consistent refractive index.

• Extruded PMMA

  Lower cost than cast grade — used for display covers, signage, and light diffusion panels where optical homogeneity is less critical. Easier to thermoform. More consistent thickness than cast.

• Our Machining Capability

  PMMA is regularly machined in our facility for optical components, display covers, light guides, and decorative panels. Machining consideration: PMMA is brittle and prone to chipping at edges — sharp tooling, climb milling, and light finishing passes are required to produce chip-free edges on transparent parts. Flame polishing and buffing are available as post-machining services to restore optical clarity to machined edges. Tolerances held to ±0.05 mm standard; optical components with tighter requirements are discussed individually. 

• Limitations & Cost Considerations

  PMMA is significantly more brittle than PC — it fractures under impact loads that PC would survive. For applications subject to impact (machine guards, safety glazing, handles), PC is the correct choice. PMMA is also susceptible to solvent attack — acetone, MEK, and many adhesive solvents craze or dissolve PMMA. Mechanical fasteners or UV-cure adhesives are the standard assembly methods. PMMA scratches more easily than glass — in high-abrasion environments, a scratch-resistant hard coat is required.
